Company A, 14th Michigan Infantry, Sons of Veterans Reserve is named for the historic 14th Regiment Michigan Veteran Volunteer Infantry. The original 14th was initially authorized by the War Department as an Independent Regiment of Infantry composed of Irishmen of Michigan however its ranks were soon supplemented by Canadians, Germans and other men of Michigan. The Regiment continued recruiting during its service receiving a few enlistees from the Southern States as well. The men of the historic Company A were primarily drawn from Michigan's Saginaw Valley area. The historic 14th was unique among Michigan regiments in that, during their service, they were utilized as Infantry, Mounted Infantry, and manned their own section of Artillery. Its soldiers completed tasks normally assigned to Engineers and its Surgeon published scholarly papers of his work. During the war the regiment rendered service in the Western Theater and "Sherman's March" during which time three of their number earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.
