A Short History of Company D, 27th Indiana Infantry, Sons of Veterans Reserve

Lance Stevens organized the Company in the summer of 2002 and became its first commander as a 1st Sergeant. In 2003 Lance was promoted from 1st Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant and the Company had grown from nine to twenty-one enlisted men. Lance was promoted to 1st Lieutenant the following year. In 2004 1st Lieutenant Larry Elbert received command of the Company supported by 2nd Lieutenant Terry Reid. In 2005 the Company, now numbering twenty-four enlisted men, commissioned and purchased its National Colors. In 2006 Alan Teller was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant. In 2009 1st Lieutenant. Alan Teller took command of the Company, now numbering 27 enlisted men, supported by 2nd Lieutenant. Bruce Kolb. Both of our past Commanders, Lance and Larry, remain in the Company as privates.

In the last four years the 27th has carried and displayed its National Colors in many events inside and outside the state of Indiana. They have been a source of pride for the Company. Most recently l Colors because of money and the artist finding time to paint the flag. In 2009 the Company commissioned its Regimental Colors to be painted and expected they will be ready any time now. In 2009 Company D participated in 14 events.

January 23, 2010, LaPorte, 9:15 AM CST, Laporte County Historical Society Museum, 2405 Indiana Ave. (Highway U S 35), Present Colors, Muster 9:00 AM

February 7, 2010, Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial (Spencer County), 2:00 PM CST, Present and Retire Colors, and lead the procession to the grave of Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Remember their time is CST. May 30, 2010, Somers Camp Memorial Day Services, 2 & 3 PM EDT, Marion & Gas City, Estates of Serenity & Riverside Cemeteries, Present Colors, Fire Salute each cemetery, Muster at 1:30 PM.

May 31, 2010, 11:00 AM, Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, 34th Street Entrance, fire volleys.

June 5, 2010, IUK Kokomo, 9:00 AM Annual Encampment, Present Colors
