Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Charles W. Corfman Commander-in-Chief 1989 / 1990

Charles W. Corfman of Holmesville, Ohio, was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War on August 16,1989, at the 108th National Encampment in Stamford, Connecticut.

Brother joined Given Camp #50 as a Charter Member when the Camp was re-organized in 1974. He claims his eligibility through Christian Curfman who served with the 37th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Brother Corfman has served in ail the Camp offices and is now Camp Treasurer.

In the Ohio Department, he has served in all positions except Secretary-Treasurer, and has twice been elected Department Commander. Nationally, he has served on Military Affairs Committee, National Site Committee, Patriotic instructor, Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief, and Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief.

A Lieutenant Colonel in the Sons of Veterans Reserve, Brother Corfman has served as Deputy Executive Officer and as Chief of Artillery.

Commander-in-Chief Corfman is also a member of Wooster United Methodist Church where he and his wife, Janice have been choir members for over 30 years. He is active in community affairs and has served as a 4-H Advisor, Chair-man of 4-H Advisory Council, and Chairman of Extension Advisory Council, where he Is still a member.

A 1952 graduate of Ohio State University (OSU), he played Tuba in concert and marching bands and is still playing in the Active Alumni Band. Once a year, he marches with the OSU Marching Band Alumni in a half-time show.

He and his wife, Janice, have a daughter, three sons, and two grand-children. Janice is a Past National President of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, and currently serves as National Treasurer. She is a Learning Disabilities Teacher at Apple Creek Elementary School.

Commander-in-Chief Corfman is a part-time beef cattle farmer and owns Corfman Distributing Co, distributing farm equipment in Ohio.
